How is nutrition therapy different from psychotherapy? Nutrition therapy focuses on food, weight management, activity and thought patterns that are keeping you from living a balanced life. It’s about developing an awareness of personal needs, alternatives to the diet mindset and behaviors that are non-supportive. Psychotherapy focuses on the underlying issues fueling the eating disorder. Relationships, feelings, and learning ways to self-soothe without using food are explored. How often do I meet with the Nutrition Therapist? You and your Nutrition Therapist will initially have an assessment meeting that lasts about 1.5 hours. At that time, based on your needs, you will agree on a schedule for meeting. Usually there are one to two hour long meetings to gather data, develop a meal pattern and set some preliminary goals. Subsequent meetings are for 30 minutes and are generally scheduled once a week in the beginning. Depending on your need and progress, meetings can be scheduled once or twice a month. How long will nutrition therapy take? The time spent in nutrition therapy can last from 6 months to 6 years. The Nutrition Therapist on your team will collaborate with your therapist and other members of your eating disorder treatment team to walk you through unraveling patterns that have taken years to establish. How do I know if nutrition therapy is right for me? When the symptoms of the eating disorder are interfering with a full and functional life, the time is right for nutrition therapy. Changing disordered eating patterns requires a commitment and a willingness to take risks to restore health.
